In the article "An Excursion in Modern Psychology" I suggest that schizophrenics should be cared for according to what Quakers in the USA developed moral treatment into during the 1840s. I intend to describe this in a little more detail here and include my own views of what the care should look like.
The first demand is that the asylum is to be governed by a superintendent who is "reasonable, humane...compassionate". So the first thing we do is to get rid of the medical doctors, since they are ass kissers. Today I would like to see psychologists in charge of the care. Secondly, compulsory institutional care must be abolished as well as forced medication. Since medical doctors are removed from the care of the mentally ill also forensic psychiatry must be abolished. Medication should be administered with greatest care and should only be given as a last resource.
Attendants should be hired according to the following criteria. Their temparament should be such that they treat the patients well. They should not consider themselves as "keepers" of the patients but rather as their "attendants" and companions. They should have no criminal record. They should have a pleasant expression of face, gentleness of tone, speech and manner, a fair amount of mental cultivation, imperturbable good temper, patience under the most trying provocation, coolness and courage in times of danger, cheerfulness without frivolity.
To sum up my view of the future for the care of the mentally ill. Get rid of the medical doctors and no more compulsory care or forced medication. Make psychologists responsible for the care of the mentally ill. Make an effort to hire good attendants. For anyone who have not noticed I do not consider mental illness to exist, but what exist is disturbing and deviant behaviour.
