WHY INFILTRATION RULES...
INFILTRATION is built on (a modification to Unreal Tournament -as somone said ”our favorite out dated gaming engine”! The plattform may not be up to date but the ideas put into the mod makes it rule anyway. There are many new third person shooters out there built on more modern engines with lot of fun aspects but still, after been playing INF, I just get irritated on the why they not include the unique features that INF have which really create addictive realism feeling in many aspects.

The basic concept of INF before the latest version (2.9) may not sound that original; It then was just a team-based military oriented game, but compered to for example the well known game CounterStrike this game went much further in REALISM. CS is simplistic arcade. INF can perhaps not be called a simulator, but at least it is so far I know the most realistic military first person shooter existing.

So whats the ”thing” with it?

Before the latest version (2.9) the ”thing” with INF was the simulation of the player bodies movement and it's equipment but also the maps; the quality of them and the living mapping community. These things made INF something special on their own but now when 2.9 is released we have a new major thing to stand out with; a new game type called EAS (Enhanced Assault).

This is a mission based game type which is far more fun and stimulating to play than the good old Team DeathMatch-mode. In EAS the competing teams alternating between being attacker-team and defender-team and TEAM-WORK is the way to success. You are as a matter of fact FORCED to team-work to stay alive and this team-feeling is addictive in its own. The new game type really make INF to a whole new game than the old version 2.86 was. I could talk A LOT about this gamtype but I think a thread ”Great INF 2.9 moments” in the Infiltration forum does this better. Also read on the Sentrystudios website for info in every aspects.

As said above the maps have to be mentioned. They have an ambition to be realistic and continuously it releases new maps to explore, for example at REALMAPS and COMBATMAPS (links at linkpage). The a greenhouse for the birth of all new user made maps is the Infiltration forum that is a really living place that makes Inf more than the game it self.

Above I also mention the realistic player simulation that made the whole game in the version before the present 2.9. More about these features below.

-Real weapon sights, no stupid computer lighting green hair cross. The sights have an ambition to be close to the real weapons they simulate.

-Your virtual player body is one of the most flexible and movable compared to other games. Except the standard stuff as walking, running and jumping, you can kneel, prone (crawl on the ground), leaning around corners.

-There is a stamina system that means you get tired (out of breath) when you run and have to stop or walk to regain the stamina. And you get more tired (and run slower) if you carry many things (weapons and ammunition in this case!).

This means you have to be very careful which weapons you choose to carry with you. This is a major thing for your total tactical approach to the game. For use on different maps that require different tactics you create different loadouts. With other words; you don't create the loadouts heedles "on the fly" in the begging of the matches that are the case in other similar games. You do it carefully when not playing.

-Everything about the weapons are meant to be realistic. From the sights to things as recoil and how long time the take to reload. All every weapons have their very special characteristic and it is as a matter of fact hard to say what's the best weapon, because all have both things they are good at and bad at. So it is really a big part of the game to choose the right weapons that suit your own way of playing. Because of the staminsystem you can't really carry more than maximum two weapons. After that you can't run at all... As in real life!

In total, all these things make INF very special. No other game I have tested go this far in realism, but the backside seem to be that it is to complicated for some people, usually those how like the "Space and Castle genre" (UnrealTournament and Quake) that is much "easier entertainment". Some people can't just take this kind of realism and complexity. Only a few have what it takes to manage this game! But those who "get it" like me, get really hooked up and addictive!
