You step through one of two doors at the top of a staircase leading downwards. Set in the wall opposite there is another barred window, the garden dimly visible beyond. You decide to follow the stairs, finding some comfort in the fact that at least you are getting closer to the ground. You arrive at a short hallway. One open door leads only into a broom cupboard, so you try another and find yourself in an untidy kitchen. Utensils and boxes clutter tables, benches and shelves, and part of the room is obscured by ragged pieces of dirty cloth hanging from lines stretched from wall to wall. You detect a smell of decay. If you like you can search around for something you can use as a weapon or maybe a pry-bar (turn to 52). If not, you had better search for a way forward (turn to 4).
