The door opens into a slightly cramped study. Dusty old leather-bound books line a few shelves, and more of them are lying disorganized in cardboard boxes or tossed onto the floor. There is a sturdy desk which, if given a good dusting, would probably look quite impressive with a hardwood top and lion's-paw feet. A book lies open on the desk, a thin leather cord serving as a bookmark. Further back you can make out the shape of a grandfather clock, which is of course not ticking. Is there anything here of interest to you? If you like you can examine the book on the desk (turn to 29) or pick one up from the floor (turn to 18). Else you could turn your attention to the clock (turn to 68), or simply leave the room and try the other door (turn to 58).
