You turn the key with some effort. The door opens with a creak onto a dark, sloping passage where stony steps lead steeply downwards. You put out your hands to feel the walls as you carefully walk down the steps, testing each of them before putting your weight on it to avoid any nasty surprises. Eventually the stairs come to an end, a cold concrete wall in front of you. The passage leads away to either side into darkness. Just as you are pondering whether to brave the cellar or return upstairs, there is a tittering sound from above and the door slams shut, leaving you in pitch-blackness! Your every nerve straining, you stand still and listen. There is no more sound. But you can make out faint areas of ghostly pale light down the left-hand passage. Probably there is a cellar window somewhere in that direction. In any case, you cannot remain standing here. You must either go towards the light (turn to 40), or turn around and feel your way in the other direction (turn to 95).
