The frayed rags and cloths rustle softly as you hold up one of the lines to step underneath. There's something vaguely disturbing about the arrangement, although you cannot say what. The rustling seems to go on, like the barely perceptible hiss of a draft. Then you see what was there all the time, and a shiver runs down your spine. The creases in the cloth create areas of light and shadow which combine in your head to form unmistakable faces. The first one you stare at is a child's, but there are others of men and women - and what's more, there is no doubt that most of them are looking at you. The sibilant sound resolves into a choir of faint whispers, each short string of words blending into the next: "... Go... Go down... He will kill you... Laughing... Find the black death... He fears only that... Go... No... He hears... No...!" All of a sudden, the whispering rises in pitch and stops abruptly. You blink your eyes and the faces are gone, only shapeless shadows remaining in their stead. You can take this as your cue to keep looking for something that will help you (turn to 55), or to hurry across the room trying not to disturb anything (turn to 4).
