The sun shines warmly as you stride up the lawn. Ahead you can see the back porch, shaded underneath the looming shape of the house. You try to estimate when the house must have been built: probably more than fifty years ago, although you cannot say for certain. As your eyes glance over the first floor windows, you halt in mid-step when you make out a human outline behind the boards obscuring one of them. At least it looks that way, or is your mind playing tricks on you? The garden is darkened noticeably as the sun passes behind a cloud, and a gust of wind sends a chill down your spine. What was that behind you? A rustling noise, like someone walking quickly on dry leaves, and a smacking sound --- You spin around, to find only a handful of dead leaves blowing across the yellowing grass. Presently the sunlight returns, and you turn your eyes back towards the house. The shape that you saw is gone! Or was it never there at all? You're beginning to like this place less and less. In any case you must now choose between examining the back porch (turn to 39) and going round the house to your right (turn to 47).
