Nexcal - Numerical Expression Calculator

Version 1.6, released 2002-11-22

About Nexcal

Nexcal is meant to be an advanced yet fast and easy to use calculator, suitable for a variety of computations. What separates Nexcal from many simpler calculators, is among other things that Nexcal can compute complete mathematical expressions, rather than simply performing one operation at a time.

Some of the features:

  • Evaluates complete mathematical expressions.
  • Includes over 30 different operators such as sin, cos, tan, mod, ln etc.
  • Can handle variables containing either single values or complete expressions.
  • Possibility to save calculations as text- or HTML-documents.
  • Includes functions for equation solving, unit conversion, prime number searching, calculating greatest common divisor / least common multiple and more.
  • Can display results as fractions.
  • Support for decimal, binary and hexadecimal numbers, that can be mixed freely within an expression.
  • Possibility to use C-style character constants, and to convert these characters between the Windows and DOS character sets.
You'll find complete lists of the available operators and functions in the Nexcal manual, which is also available here.
What's new in this version
Some of the changes:
  • The user interface has been upgraded to take advantage of the Windows XP look and to better handle custom appearance settings.
  • Results are rounded more to eliminate floating point errors.
  • Two new functions, Round and Root, and a new operator, cbrt, have been added.
  • It's now possible to clear the calculation history and to reset variables.
  • Case-sensitivity has been removed where possible.
A complete list of changes is available in the Nexcal manual.
Terms of redistribution
Nexcal is a so called freeware program, which means that it can be redistributed freely under the conditions that it is distributed in a complete and unaltered form, and that it is distributed free of charge. The program must not be modified in any way.
System requirements
The following requirements need to be met in order for Nexcal to function properly:
  • Windows 98/ME/NT4/2000/XP (Windows 95 should work as well, but it hasn't been tested)
  • Internet Explorer 5 or later (required for the help system)
Some older systems may require an additional installation of some shared system files. If so the setup program will inform you of this. See below for more information.
To download and install Nexcal, follow these steps:
  1. Click on the link Download below. You'll get a question regarding whether you'd like to save the file or run it from its current location. Choose save.
  2. A window will open where you'll have to choose a download location. If uncertain, choose Desktop.
  3. Wait for the download to complete.
  4. Locate the downloaded file and run it. If you chose Desktop you'll find it on the desktop.
  5. If the setup application starts, you may close your browser and continue with the installation. If you get a message that says some shared files are too old, you first need to install the shared files.

If you're using an old operating system and don't have that many applications installed, you may need to install some shared system files that are needed to run Nexcal. However, these files are normally already installed, so before installing the files available here, first try to install Nexcal. If the setup program says your shared files are too old, then follow the instructions below:
  1. Click on the link Download below. Choose to save the file and then wait for the download to complete.
  2. Locate the downloaded file and extract the contents using a Zip-compatible compression program of your choice.
  3. Open the file Read me.txt and follow the instructions.
  4. When you're done, install Nexcal as described above.
