Doctoral thesis on the stability of high pit slopes. The thesis was presented in February 1999 (presentation found here). A summary of the thesis is found here. The thesis work comprised of literature reviews, compilation of a database of stable and unstable large scale rock slopes, investigation of failure mechanisms by means of numerical modeling, assessment of rock mass properties, analysis of case studies, and development and application of design methodology to the Aitik open pit mine.

The complete thesis is made available for downloading (see link). An extended summary is also available. A paper copy may be ordered, subject to availability at the University. The total price is 80 USD, including shipping and handling. To order a paper copy of the thesis, please email me: jonny.sjoberg@vattenfall.com

Report on how to estimate rock mass strength using the Hoek-Brown failure criterion and rock mass classfication. The report contains a literature review of the Hoek-Brown criterion, up until the 1997 revision, with special focus on how to apply the criterion to large scale rock slopes. A practical example concludes the report.

The latest (2002) update of the Hoek-Brown criterion is not included; however, the revision (by Hoek & co-workers) regarding the disturbance factor was partly prompted by the work reported here and at the SME Conference for the Aznalcollar pit slope.
