LIBRARIES AND ARCHITECTURE

Photo: Åke E:son Lindman. The new library of the Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm. Ahrbom Arkitektkontor. Architecture is a social concern and so are the libraries. During the Swedish Year of Architecture 2001 several conferences on the theme "libraries and architecture" were arranged, and in May 2002 Arkitekturmuseet (the Swedish Museum of Architecture) will publish an anthology with this title: Bibliotek och arkitektur: byggnader, rum, samlingar. (ISBN 91-85460-66-4, Arkitekturmuseets skriftserie, nr. 9).

The authors are 30 librarians and architects from the Nordic countries, the librarians mainly from the ARLIS circle of Nordic art librarians (ARLIS/Norden). The content and message of this book is directed towards librarians as well as architects and a general public, who search for knowledge within this area and inspiration for their own projects.

The book is disposed in three parts - buildings, rooms, collections - and within this frame a dialogue over the boundaries, both in content and professionally, is developed. The perspective on the subject is alternating past, present and future and the different items cover from the oldest libraries to those under construction.

Magdalena Gram, the editor of the book, is a member of ARLIS/Norden and head of Section of Maps, Prints and Printed Music at the Royal Library in Stockholm. The volume comprises 288 pages and is profusely illustrated, partly in colour. Each article has a summary in English. Price SEK 300 incl. VAT. Postage is extra. Please send book orders to Arkitekturmuseet, Skeppsholmen, S-111 49 Stockholm, Sweden, or by e-mail: info@arkitekturmuseet.se, including your name, institution and full address.
